What is Book-Bat?

Fantasy, like any genre, is a tool: a style of storytelling with both strengths and weaknesses. We exist to help Christians think well about how the genre has been utilized, how it could be utilized, and what can make fantasy stories special and meaningful, fun or deeply instructive.

Karlissa J first started publishing novels in 2013. Years later, she and her husband Jason Koop started up Book-Bat: both as an extension of Karlissa’s authoring platform, and as an opportunity to do new creative projects together.

Through podcast, blog posts, and books, Book-Bat seeks to start discussions around the fantasy genre. We plan to dive into books and shows, comics and video games. And we cover both recent releases and the classics, from new Star Wars shows to George MacDonald’s 1895 Lilith.

Speaking of classics: Karlissa J has finished the initial drafts of her first nonfiction book, an introduction to four Christian fantasy authors and how they used the genre for teaching spiritual truths.
